Letty tried to hide a smile as she and Jean headed back to the hotel. She shouldn’t be smiling at all. What business did she have setting her cap for a man that wasn’t going to be in town for more than a week at most? She’d be a fool to get sweet on Sterling Darling, yet…she was starting to think she was.

Problem was, she’d never been sweet on anyone before. How would she know if she was getting into trouble? Maybe it was simple attraction and nothing more. Anyone could see how handsome the Darlings were.

“What are you grinning at?” Jean asked.

Letty blushed. “Nothing. I … was thinking about what to make for dinner.”

“I thought we decided on fried chicken.” Jean swung her arms back and forth in a carefree manner.

Letty laughed. “What are you doing?”

“Just thinking. Dora should be back today or tomorrow. What if she got the loan?”

“Then I hope she puts it to good use. The hotel could do with some sprucing up.”

“Are you going to help?”

“If she wants me to. I have things I’m sprucing up too.”

“Like what?”

She gave Jean a sidelong glance. “Like my room. I’ve decided to move into my parent’s old one.”

Jean smiled. “I’m glad. It’s bigger and you had that sheet…not that separating your side of the room from Elam’s was bad, but he’s…gone.”

“I know.” She walked a little further. “Would you like it?”

“Excuse me?”

“Mine and Elam’s old room. Would you like to use it?”

Jean stopped. “You mean, live with you?”

Letty nodded. “We wouldn’t be alone then.”

“Oh, my, I’ll…have to think about this. My living quarters aren’t bad, just small.”

“You could help me with the ranch, and I could help you when you need me.”

Jean laughed. “Let me think about it. I’ve grown used to having my privacy. My mother used to drive me plumb loco. When she passed years back, I was surprised I missed her nagging. Then Pa did enough to make up for it.” She hung her head. “I miss him.”

“I miss my Pa too. And Elam.” She started walking again. “It’s all right if you don’t want to.”

Jean smiled. “I know.” She sighed. “In fact, I have a confession to make.”

Letty stopped again. “You do?”

Jean bit her lip and nodded. “Dora asked if I wanted to live at the hotel with her.”

“She what?”

Jean shrugged. “I told her no. I guess there’s something about having your own place. I can do what I want when I want and…”

Letty held up a hand. “Say no more. I understand.” She set off again.

When they reached the hotel, they went inside and began to gather what they needed for the evening meal. As soon as they were done, Letty headed home.

When she arrived, she looked at everything Sterling had done the day before. He cleaned the barn, repaired part of the porch railing, and helped her take the rugs out to be cleaned. He even whacked them with a broom for a while. She’d never met anyone so willing to work, and it didn’t matter what type of work it was.
